Bakefest Friday - Banana Bread

Friday, August 31, 2012

Happy Friday to you all! It's the end of another great work week and time to get started on a long holiday weekend, woo hoo! So what better way to get started than with a house smelling of cherry pie, or sugar cookies. Or better yet - Banana bread! Happy baking and see you all in September!

Banana Bread
Prep time: 15 min        Cook Time: 45 min           Yield: 1 loaf

- 3 mashed bananas
- 1/3 cup melted butter
- 3/4 cup sugar
- 1 egg, beaten
- 1 tsp. vanilla extract
- 1 tsp. cinnamon
- 1 tsp. baking soda
- Pinch of salt
- 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup walnuts

1. Preheat oven to 350°F.
2. Combine mashed banana and melted butter in a bowl. I use a potato masher to easily mash my bananas.
3. Add in sugar, egg, vanilla and cinnamon to banana mixture. Mix well until all ingredients are combined. Set aside.
4. In a separate bowl, stir flour, salt and baking soda. Stir into banana mixture gradually, mixing until smooth. Stir in walnuts. Spread into a greased loaf pan.
5. Bake for 40-45 minutes. Insert a toothpick to check on the baking - if it comes out clean it is ready to come out!

Add 1/2 cup dried cranberries to the batter.
Add 1/3 cup flaked coconut to batter
Add 1/3 cup chocolate chips to batter.

My Favourite Craft Websites

Thursday, August 30, 2012

Good day all! As some of you know, I am all into crafts and creating new things with the things I find around my home or in stores for a cheap price. Today I will share with you a few of my favourite websites where I get most of my inspiration from.

You have probably stumbled upon this website a few times, or might be an addicted user of it (I sure am!). Pinterest allows you to make boards of all the things you love or discover on the web and share with other users of the site. Alternatively, you can also browse other pinboards by topic or those created by other users. You can browse recent pins by selecting a specific topic of interest, and just be lost in the wonderful pictures and ideas of the photo gallery. In order to register, you need to be invited by a Pinterest user. If you dont have an account with Pinterest but would like one, please email me and I'll invite you!

Similar to Pinterest, craftgawker displays a photo gallery type of layout to allow the users to visually search for arts and crafts. Its a neat way to see what others have done to help inspire you on your next craft project! You can freely register onto the site, ulike pinterest where you need to be invited.

Instructables is a newly discovered site for me. This website allows users to share what they create through photos of either the project or a step-by-step guide or through video tutorials. Its like a youtube version for crafts-y people! They have an assortment of growing topics from food to living to technology. Check it out!

Hello and Welcome!

Wednesday, August 29, 2012

Hello and welcome to “Taste of August”. Before starting this blog, I was stalking and drooling over other decor, design and recipe blogs on the web for months, and I mean MONTHS. I have always been the type of girl to write in diaries. So blogs naturally appeal to me. I love reading what others are doing to better improve their home and life, what new dish someone has cooked up, and how life is like in other parts of the world. It is a great way to learn new things and to better educate oneself. This is why I was thinking of starting up a blog of my own – sharing my home ideas, my recipes, and my DIY and craft skills. While I have always kept my diary secretive when I was a young girl, I was contemplating making an online “diary” of personal posts visible to anyone who stumbles across this site. At first I thought “Who wouldn’t love to read about my ideas, thoughts, and recipes” and then after a few days I thought “There are so many blogs out there, who WOULD read about what I have to say?” After a few more days of thinking and contemplating, I finally swallowed my fears, warmed up my chair and took a stand. And that is how this blog was born!

Because I was born in August, it will be a “taste” of everything I like – recipes, interior design, entertaining, DIY projects and tips. And boy, do I have lots to share with you! As with any business comes a business plan. And likewise with this blog came a plan – an extensive plan that was growing and evolving each day for the past month. I hope you take the time and visit on occasion, with a hope that this blog will inspire you, give you something new to think about and try. Please leave a comment, let me know what your thoughts are on what you are reading on this blog – in the end it is what the readers opinions and likes that will help improve this blog! Again, many thanks for stopping by!
